Gas Networks Ireland is responsible for operating and maintaining Ireland’s natural gas network, delivering essential services to homes and businesses nationwide. With a large field-based workforce managing critical infrastructure, having a secure and efficient mobile platform is vital for operational success. To enhance mobility, security, and workforce productivity, Gas Networks Ireland partnered with MWS to design and implement a comprehensive mobile solution.

The Challenge

Mobile Working Solutions (MWS) partnered with Gas Networks Ireland to streamline and standardise over 2,000 mobile devices across their workforce. The project involved migrating devices from multiple management systems to a unified Microsoft Intune and Azure (MS Entra ID) platform. MWS also deployed and managed over 500 Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 5 devices for field teams. These rugged tablets, enabled with e-SIM technology, fully leveraged 5G connectivity. The result was a more efficient, secure, and future-ready mobile ecosystem across Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland

Our Approach

To address Gas Networks Ireland's needs our specialists:

  • Led the design and architectural planning of the Mobility Platform to ensure scalable, secure, and future-ready mobile solutions.

  • Served as Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Technical Lead for the Mobility Platform, overseeing its end-to-end technical implementation.

  • Developed and implemented device configuration policies, application management protocols, and advanced security controls.

  • Designed and executed a comprehensive asset lifecycle management strategy, covering procurement, deployment, support, and decommissioning.

  • Conducted full lifecycle testing across all mobility environments, including System Integration Testing (SIT), User Acceptance Testing (UAT), pre-production, and production deployments.

  • Provided Level 3 operational support for mobile devices, including provisioning, troubleshooting, and ongoing maintenance.

  • Delivered onsite technical support, configuration services, and end-user training across multiple GNI locations in Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland.

  • Collaborated closely with Gas Networks Ireland (GNI) application support teams and external technology partners to ensure seamless service delivery.

Results & Impact

MWS managed the entire device lifecycle, from procurement and pre-deployment staging to logistics, handover, and end-user enablement. Dedicated MWS resources provided on-site technical support during rollout, delivering one-to-one assistance and ensuring a smooth, confident adoption experience for all field users. This comprehensive approach helped drive strong user engagement and operational continuity from day one.

 

Following deployment, MWS continues to deliver Level 3 mobility support and ongoing specialist consultancy to help GNI maintain a secure, efficient, and policy-compliant mobile estate. The Challenge

Bord Gáis Networks needed a robust mobile platform to support its field teams, ensuring secure communication, streamlined workflows, and seamless access to corporate systems. The solution had to integrate with their existing Citrix VDI environment while maintaining high levels of security and efficiency. Additionally, onboarding users effectively—ranging from field technicians to senior support teams—was critical for a successful rollout.

The Solution

Approach: MWS worked within the project team to design and deliver a secure and scalable mobile solution. We developed a tailored mobility strategy incorporating rugged PDAs, advanced device management, and a secure mobile VPN. Our focus was on ensuring seamless integration, user-friendly deployment, and minimal disruption to ongoing operations.

Implementation: We supplied, installed, and configured the MobiControl Device Management solution, ensuring robust security and centralised control. Overcoming challenges with Citrix VDI, we successfully deployed MobiControl and Mobility XE VPN to enhance remote access and data security. A structured mobile provisioning programme was introduced, alongside an onsite training programme to equip all users—from field engineers to senior IT teams—with the skills to maximise efficiency. Additionally, we managed a pilot programme, working closely with third-party providers to rigorously test the entire solution before full deployment.

Results & Impact

The new mobile platform significantly improved workforce efficiency, providing secure and seamless access to corporate systems in the field. The deployment of MobiControl and Mobility XE ensured strong security, centralised device control, and smooth remote connectivity.

 

The structured onboarding process and training programme led to rapid user adoption and minimised downtime.With a fully tested and scalable mobile infrastructure in place, Bord Gáis Networks is now equipped to support its workforce with secure, reliable mobile technology for years to come.
