Client Overview
Impellam Group is a global leader in managed services and specialist staffing, operating across the UK, North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Australasia. In 2022, they undertook a major overhaul of their mobile infrastructure as part of a wider drive to strengthen their cybersecurity posture and achieve UK Cyber Essentials accreditation.
The Challenge
Impellam’s mobile estate spanned over 4,500 devices across multiple regions and platforms, managed through various disparate systems. With increasing security and compliance requirements, they needed a unified, scalable solution that aligned with Cyber Essentials controls and could support their evolving mobility strategy.
Our Approach
To address Impellam's needs, our specialists:
-
Served as a key partner in Impellam’s mobility strategy, collaborating with IT and business teams to solve mobility challenges and integrate mobile technology into core business processes.
-
Designed and deployed a unified Microsoft Intune platform for over 5,000 global devices, streamlining management across iOS, Android, and Windows.
-
Delivered on-site, one-to-one deployment support to ensure smooth adoption and minimal business disruption, achieving user satisfaction rates consistently above 95%.
-
Introduced e-SIM technology across field devices, improving connectivity and centralising SIM management to enhance mobile communication strategy.
-
Supported the rollout and management of new mobile applications, collaborating with internal teams on deployment, configuration, and security.
-
Created a comprehensive asset lifecycle plan, including evaluation and replacement strategies for end-of-life devices.
-
Documented key mobility processes and procedures to build a consistent knowledge base, support rapid onboarding, and drive continuous service improvement.
Results & Impact
To meet Impellam’s need for a secure, unified, and scalable mobile platform, MWS led the complete redesign of its global Mobile Device Management (MDM) architecture. We began by consolidating several disparate MDM environments into a single Microsoft Intune instance, ensuring consistent control, policy enforcement, and visibility across more than 4,500 devices worldwide. This new framework was designed to align with Cyber Essentials security requirements, providing robust controls around access, patching, malware protection, and configuration management.
The project covered multiple device types including iOS, Android, and Windows and introduced zero-touch deployment capabilities through the integration of Samsung Knox and Apple Business Manager. We designed and implemented tailored enrolment processes, security baselines, device restrictions, and application management protocols to suit both corporate and field user needs.
To ensure a seamless transition, MWS conducted full testing cycles - System Integration Testing (SIT), User Acceptance Testing (UAT), Pre-production (PPROD), and Production (PROD) before rollout. We also delivered in-depth training for service desk and support teams and produced detailed documentation for ongoing maintenance. Dedicated MWS specialists supported user migrations both remotely and on-site across the UK and Europe, providing a smooth and disruption-free onboarding experience.
Throughout the engagement, MWS played an active role as part of Impellam’s IT security team, providing strategic input, managing technical vendor relationships, and supporting the secure deployment of new mobile apps. Governance structures were built to allow flexible, independent management of different user groups, while e-SIM rollout and staged provisioning models reduced setup time and improved connectivity across regions. The result was a future-ready, compliant, and highly manageable mobile estate.
