1) Crash loops and crash-rate spikes
One-off crashes happen. What matters is trend and clustering:
A spike right after an app update
Crashes concentrated on a specific OS version
Repeated crashes on the same subset of devices
Crash-rate spikes are among the strongest indicators that an incident is forming, and they’re often containable quickly by pausing rollouts or rolling back versions.
2) Storage thresholds (especially for shared devices)
Storage is a silent failure mode. Devices don’t gradually become “a bit worse”, they cross a threshold and then everything falls over:
App updates fail
Performance degrades
Camera/scanner workflows break
Crash loops become more likely
Set practical thresholds (e.g., early warning at ~80%, action at ~90%) and define the action: cleanup, cache clearing, removal of non-essential apps, or scheduled resets for shared devices.
3) Battery health trendlines (not battery percentage)
Battery percentage is a moment. Battery health is a trend.
Ageing batteries reduce uptime and can trigger:
Mid-shift shutdowns
Charging instability
Thermal issues and performance throttling
Inconsistent user experiences that look like “random device problems”
Track battery health by role and device age so replacement becomes planned, not reactive.
4) Network drops and quality by location
Average signal strength isn’t enough. The best signal is instability:
Repeated disconnects
Wi-Fi handoff/roaming problems in specific zones
Latency spikes during peak hours
Throughput dips by site and time
Tie network monitoring to the reality of where work happens. If you can see issues by location and time, you can fix them strategically instead of guessing.
5) “Apps running” patterns that indicate stuck states
Some of the most damaging issues aren’t “down.” They’re “stuck”:
An app restarting repeatedly
An app hanging in the background consuming resources
a workflow that can’t progress due to a state mismatch
Monitoring unusual runtime patterns can surface “stuck states” before users report them — which is where proactive ops gets its biggest wins.
The Signals that Often Mislead Without Context
Some metrics create noise without improving prevention:
Raw alert volumes without baselines
One-off network dips without repetition or clustering
Compliance status alone, without knowing what it breaks operationally
Inventory changes that don’t correlate with incidents
These aren’t useless, they’re just poor primary indicators when your goal is stability.
Build an Alert Model that Leads to Action
Every proactive signal should have:
A baseline (what “normal” looks like)
A threshold (what counts as abnormal)
An owner (who responds)
An action (what happens next)
An escalation path (what if it persists)
For example:
Crash spikes → app owner pauses rollout and validates versions
Storage breaches → ops triggers cleanup or scheduled reset
Network instability by location → network team validates AP capacity and roaming
Without ownership, alerts become theatre.
Start Small: Build a Weekly Stability Routine
